Begin Again

Well, I am just coming off of the worst illness that I have ever had.  I know that I need to exercise more and find the time to fit it into my schedule.  I got off track with my recipes and grocery system but I am bound and determined to get back into the swing of things.

One of the things that I noticed when I stopped my healthy habits in December was that the water really got to me.  I just couldn't get past drinking that much water.  I need to rethink that one.  Also I believe that doing both Taekwondo and Hapkido is too much.  I need to pick one and stick with it.  I am leaning towards Taekwondo. We are pinching our pennies and if I keep up with Hapkido I will have to pay to test over and over again.  This will help me cut down on the time it takes out of my day to accomplish this goal.  I also need to do more at home working out.

1. I am going to start by walking for 30 minutes a day.

2. Work on flexibility with stretching

3. 25 push ups (on my knees)

4. 25 sit ups trying not to lay all the way down

5. I also plan on attending Taekwondo 3x a week.

We will see what happens from there.

Week 9

THIS week                                Week 1
Weight: 150 lbs                      150.4 lbs
bust: 39 in                                    39.5 in
waist: 33 in                                  33.5 in
tummy: 36 in                                 40 in
hips: 42 in                                      43 in

Goals:
3x TKD
3x Hapkido
3x run 5 min
3x 25 sit ups
2x 25 push ups

eat breakfast lunch and dinner
no snacking unless fruits or veggies raw
only water to drink
drink water 8x8 rule (8 oz 8x a day)
every 2 hours starting at 6 am
fruit for breakfast
salad for lunch

Kids goals:
brush teeth 2x a day
flush!
make their bed

I can tell you right now that these goals will probably not be met with Thanksgiving.  Our Martial Arts facility is closed Thurs, Fri, Sat, and Sun.  I have reevaluated my schedule and my family's needs and have changed the times that I go to martial arts.  So this will only give me 1 day of TKD and 1 day of Hap.  I think that I will try to run and do sit ups and push ups only because of how sad I am with my stats for the past week.  Water is still hard for me.  Snacking this past week was hard and I am afraid that I will snack this week because of Thanksgiving.  But you know what?  I am not too terribly sad about it.  We had a good time as a family this past week and I am going to give myself a break and enjoy being with family without stressing over when and what I should eat.  The same goes for this week.

I do have to say though that I think I am going to make eating a salad a must for Lunch.  There were a few times when we ate leftover dinner for lunch and it was really hard to work out with that kind of food in my stomach.  A friend of mine said that instant oatmeal was not a good breakfast for your body, which is depressing because that is exactly what I eat for breakfast everyday.  So I think I will eat fresh fruit from now on.

Kids are kids.  I will keep them on these for a little while longer ;)

Overview week 8

This was a fun week with Grandparents in town.  Brian and I got to see Garth Brooks in concert!  He does not look or act like a guy who is 52 years old.  Trisha Yearwood only sang like 3 songs.  It felt more like a potty break for Garth than a headliner.  Garth Brooks was the first country CD Brian ever bought and when he did he bought the box set!  It was a very fun date even though we had to go to Greensboro to see him.  We like PNC much better.

Brian and I also received our black belts this week.  We tested for them back in May and received them on Saturday.  I am now a 2nd degree Taekwondo black belt and Brian is now a 1st degree Hapkido black belt.  in May of 2015 Laura will test for her 1st degree Hapkido, Christian will test for his 3rd degree Taekwondo, and Eric will test for his 1st degree Taekwondo.   They will receive their black betls a year from now.  Once Eric gets his black belt we will be a family of black belts!

I am not looking forward to seeing what my stats are.  With last week going out of town for 4 days and eating out and this week having company I have not kept up my habits.  This week I was especially weak with no snacking.  I made peppermint bark brownies and they just kept calling out to me everytime I past the fridge.  I finally told my kids that I expected all the brownies to be eaten by the time we get back from Garth Brooks or I will be very disappointed!  They got right to it ;)  It is really hard keeping up with good habits when life gets in the way.  It is so easy to make the excuse and not adhere to your routine.  Now the hard part will be getting back into the habits.  It will be interesting with the holiday season upon us to see how easy it will be to keep these good habits.

Habits are starting to get harder to form with adding so many.  I can tell you right now that the kids, even just being gone for 4 days are totally out of their habits.  I am not going to start from scratch with them but try to really promote them!

Overview week 7

This week was not to the goals only because we went to Indianapolis, IN to watch our daughter perform in the Grand National Championships for Bands of America!  It was awesome!  We got to stay with my sister Jill and see both sets of grandparents from Texas and Michigan.  I am so thankful that we have family that comes and supports us when we are doing something that we think is a big deal!  Laura's band made it to Semi Finals which is a HUGE deal!  Never before has our band made it into the Semi Finals.  There were 94 bands that performed and only 35 went on to Semi Finals.  It was a nail bitter because they didn't call our band until number 34 and then the 35th band they called was the other high school that went from Cary, NC!  How exciting that both bands made it into the Semi Finals!  This is what they got to take home for being a Semi Finalist!
So with that said, we were traveling for most of the week so it was eating out mostly.  I did get 2 days of Taekwondo and Hapkido and 2 days of running, 25 situps, and 25 pushups.  Yeah me!  Here are more pics of BOA and their Semi Final performance!

Laura is in the hot pink shirt with grey sweats. Last rehearsal before BOA

Week 7

THIS week                                Week 1
Weight: 148.8 lbs                      150.4 lbs
bust: 39 in                                    39.5 in
waist: 32.5 in                                  33.5 in
tummy: 36.5 in                                 40 in
hips: 42 in                                      43 in

Goals:
3x TKD
3x Hapkido
3x run 5 min
3x 25 sit ups

eat breakfast lunch and dinner
no snacking unless fruits or veggies raw
only water to drink
drink water 8x8 rule (8 oz 8x a day)
every 2 hours starting at 6 am

Kids goals:
brush teeth 2x a day
flush!
make their bed

I still need to work on making my list habits.  So once again I will be sticking with my list.  But wow, seeing my weight and inches go up has really put a fire under me to try to succeed this week!

My kids will be sticking with their list also because they had a hard time with making their bed.  It might be because I also wanted them to clean their room if their bed was made but that is another habit so I should really just be happy with the small goal of the bed before I expect more.

Also the kids this week are going to be switching their normal chore for the next 6 months.

Laura: washing dirty dishes
Christian: putting clean dishes away
Samuel: washing dirty laundry and moving to dryer
Eric: folding and putting away clean laundry

Cross our fingers and hope their new chore is a success.  Laura and Christian did a horrible job with their old chores of the laundry.  Hopefully dishes will be a better fit for them.  But then in 6 months it will all change again.

Overview of week 6

Well this was not a successful week exercise wise.  It is just so hard to get all this exercising in when you are so busy with four children.  I did go to Taekwondo and Hapkido 2x.  However, I did not get my sit ups or running in.  They just have not become a habit for me yet and so are easy to drop when things get busy.  I am thinking about just getting everything done on M, W, & F around noon so that I can have said that I did them and not be stressed about doing something physical everyday.  That might also help me get more things done on T, R, and Sat around the house.

I still was not successful with the water amount.  I am trying, but that is really a lot of water and hard to keep track if I did it.   I am so scattered brained.  Also this week we did a taste test of three different chocolate chip ice cream sandwiches and I am sure that was not good for weight ;)  Each recipe called for 2 sticks of butter.  It will be fun to see if my thighes are huge!  Of course I only ate a quarter of two cookies and then a whole cookie from the winning cookie and that was over two days.  But the winner is not only the winner in taste it just was so much simpler to make also.  Fun.  I love testing recipes against others.  We did that with the Buttermilk Pancake recipe too and the chicken enchiladas recipe.

My husband has been getting on to me ever since I started this blog that my blog is probably the only one out there in the whole world that has healthy in the title and then has cinnamon rolls or ice cream sandwiches for recipes.  I keep telling him, "The habits are healthy, not the recipes!"  So I updated my blog description to reflect that!

We feed the Sister Missionaries from our church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  They asked me what my favorite scripture was and I said Psalms 37:4

Delight thyself also in the Lordand he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

I loved that verse.  That was my favorite verse from before I joined the church when I was 21, and it continues to be my favorite verse.  I have never been led astray if I put the Lord first.  Even when I might be heading down the wrong path, He will always see me through and my feet land on the right path when I delight in Him.  What does delight mean to me, read your scriptures and apply them to your life.  It is that simple.  We read as a family and I read on my own.  I also put the conference Ensign in the bathroom so that I can read it when I am in there.  I am not perfect but I am trying to be more like Jesus.

This week I did my weight and measurements Monday morning.  I fell asleep at 8 pm last night.  I was so tired.  I thought I would just rest my eyes and do them later in the evening, but nope!  So I am sure the weight is low, but then again I have had 16 oz of water and breakfast this morning so far so maybe not.

Because last week I did nothing!  I am just going to keep everything the same.  Hopefully I have not lost too much stamina after taking a week off.  I do though think that I will just do an easy run and not try for the one mile.  I do not want to push it.

Overview week 5

This has been the worst week by far.  I only exercised once and that was on Sat and that was just for a forms class becasue I wanted to take it easy.  I have been dizzy all week.  I do not know what is wrong with me.  This happened 4 months ago but I was exercising and thought I just over did it.  However, this time the dizziness wakes me up from my sleep.  I feel foggy while standing but mostly when I am laying down the room starts spinning.  I can feel it even with my eyes closed.  Brian said that on Sunday I had a fever.  I hate going to the Dr. and have yet again not gone.  I am sure this has something to do with my periods.  The last time I got this I started soon after.  I have low blood platelets and low blood pressure.  I wonder if those have anything to do with it?

Oh well, but because of that I was in no way going to exercise and make the vertigo worse.  Then I snacked a few times, and I was really bad about getting enough water.  SO, I guess this week I am just going to try to do all the things that I should have done last week but vertigo got in the way.  I am telling you I in no way like how it feels to be dizzy.   It is HORRIBLE!

The kids are doing better.  Thanks to Halloween we now have really good incentives for them to get into their healthy habits!

tummy: 36 in                             40 in
hips: 41.5 in                                  43 in

every 2 hours starting at 6 am

Kids goals:
brush teeth 2x a day
flush!
make their bed

I am keeping it the same because I hurt myself last week so I only exercised M-W and drinking 8x8 water was super hard.

Overview of week 4

Wow, was it hard to drink so much water a day.   I think I did good most days up till the kids came home from school and then it was just chaos and I could never remember if I had my glass of water at a certain time or not.

Exercising did not go as planned because on Wed I sprang my ankle.  So I took Thur, Fri, & Sat off to rest it.

So basically this week was a big failure.  Which means I am not adding anything else on for this coming week.  I need to work on what I have and make sure that I get back into my exercising habits because I took 3 days off (4 if you count Sun which I never do anything on because of the Sabbath!).
I had weird dreams last night that felt so real with me being dizzy.  Well, it turned out that they were not dreams and I am having dizzy spells.  Hopefully this will not keep me from working out this coming week.  But boy, I do not like the room spinning one bit.

Kids:

They were not perfect but we could tell that they were really trying. They were honest when they did not brush their teeth and we gave them spot inspections with their toilets.  I think it is good to move on to more habits for them.

I cannot believe that we are still on this for the kids.  They are sooooooo bad at these.  Wow!

I actually think that drinking 8 oz of water 8x a day is going to be the most difficult thing I do.  I drink so little during the day I know it is bad for me.  I hope that I do not gain a ton of weight this week just because of all the water I will be drinking ;)

Here is an overview of the past month stat wise:

Overview of Week 3

I had some conflicts that made getting TKD and Hapkido in on all three of M, W, & F but I was able to go to the Sat classes.  I also was able to run 3x a week, again not on my T, R, S schedule, but I did do them, Yeah me!!!

Wow, again eating 3 meals a day did not work out for me.  Sundays is actually a hard day to get 3 meals in since church starts at 1 pm.  I know that sounds crazy but most days I do not get lunch till 3 pm so it really feels like I am eating breakfast and then turning around and eating lunch.  Sat I didn't get it in either because I didn't want to eat breakfast and then go to a morning Hapkido class.  I think I would have made myself sick.

My husband says that he can see me slimming down and my face is looking thinner!  I just wish that I felt thinner.  I actually ran for 7 1/2 minutes.  I ran around the neighborhood.  I was wondering how far it was so I drove my route.  Turns out it was .8 of a mile.  Darn it.  But now I know what a mile is so I will at least shoot for a mile next week even though this weeks goal was just to run for 5 minutes.  When I run at TKD it is easy for me to set the time limit because I would rather time myself than try to count 30 laps on a tiny track!  So if I do run at TKD I will just go for 8 minutes I guess.

Week 3 Goals

THIS week                                Week 1
Weight: 148.6 lbs                      150.4 lbs
bust: 38.5 in                               39.5 in
waist: 32.75 in                           33.5 in

hips: 42 in                                  43 in

Goals:
3x TKD
3x Hapkido
3x run 5 min

eat breakfast lunch and dinner
no snacking unless fruits or veggies raw
only water to drink

Kids goals:
brush teeth 2x a day
flush!

(Note: I feel like a am cheating a little bit because I only drink water to begin with, but that is healthy and I want to salitify that I will go 3x a week to TKD and Hapkido.  The hard part about this week is running, Ughhhhh)

Week 2 observations

It was so much easier to do the 3x taekwondo and hapkido this week.  There were no other commitments that got in the way.  I guess I just have to make sure that I don't schedule too much on M, W, and F so that I will not feel too overwhelmed to get them in.  I have to decide if exercise is a priority that I will put above other activities.  I would say that in most cases I will be able to make up a class on Sat if I get busy on one day.  But I need to get into the mindset that TKD is not something to be missed or else I will find that I am willing to skip it.

Eating 3 meals a day still was a struggle.  I found myself missing a breakfast and one day I missed a lunch.  That made it so I ate at 6 am but didn't eat again till after 9 pm that night.  That cannot be healthy.  Also there was one day when I chaparoned a field trip that lasted from 8:30 am till after 3 am the next day.  That was not a good day for 3 meals.  I packed a lunch which I ate around 10 am.  Then bought Bojangles chicken strips and fries at the concession stand and then ate chips and teddy grahams at midnight as a snack on the bus.

The kids only brush their teeth when I remind them.  No habits forming there.  I do though think that I will continue reminding them and add on that they need to flush.  The punishment for not flushing has not been determined.  They get ice cream or dessert of whatever kind we are having that night if they have done both throughout the day.  I guess we will see how this will work and how will I know which of the minions didn't flush!

Week 2

THIS week                                                Week 1
Weight: 149.2 lbs                                          150.4 lbs
Bust: 38 in                                                     39 in
Waist: 33 in (tummy: 38 in)                            33.5 in (tummy 40 in)
Hips: 42 in                                                     43 in

Goals:

3 TKD (did not accomplish last week)
3 Hapkido
3 meals (did not accomplish last week)
no snacking

Kids goals:

brush teeth 2x per day (did not accomplish last week)

Note:  I am still getting use to measuring myself.  I do not know if by some miracle I actually lost inches in the past week or if I just measured wrong then or now.  I have had in the back of my head all the goals that I want to achieve but am not holding myself accountable for them yet.  Also rose came this week ;)

week 1 overview

I thought that doing something as simple as attending 3 Taekwondo classes a week and eating 3 meals a day would be a sinch.  Boy was I wrong.  This week was crazy with marching band.  Unless I wanted to be stressed out, which I do not think is healthy, I had to give myself a break and not attend one of my TKD classes.  But what really surprised me is how busy I am in the mornings.  There were two days when it was 11 am and I went oh I should eat breakfast.  Then 20 minutes later Brian was like I need to eat lunch now, so I ate lunch right away.  Then there were two days when I just gave up and only ate lunch and dinner.  I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I wake up for 3-4 hours but don't eat because I go back to bed for 2 more hours and wake up at 10:30 am and forget about breakfast till it is time for lunch.  Since I am Mormon I do not get the luxury of coffee and I tire myself out everyday just a few hours into the day.

So, should I stay with trying to get these two goals perfect or move on to more challenging goals?  I think that because I do hapkido right after TKD I am going to add that one in.  And I think I am going to add in no snacking except for fresh fruits and veggies.  I do not think that will be too difficult.  But who knows!

As for the kids.  Boy do they need more work on brushing their teeth 2x a day.  I think we will just keep them on that for this coming week.

Goals - kids

Yesterday as I was driving my kids to Taekwondo I was thinking about how I was accomplishing my first goal of attending Taekwondo 3x a week.  Then I got to thinking, "Wouldn't it be great if other people posted their habits that they were trying to cultivate and we could help motivate each other throughout the week?"  Then I looked in my rearview mirror at my three boys and thought, "Wow!  I have been really self centered lately  thinking about how I don't like the way I look, and how can I fix myself."  These children of mine need to develope some pretty important habits before they leave my home in a few short years.  I bet we can help each other out.

Last night I sat down at the dinner table and decided that instead of reading the scriptures as a family we would do a Family Home Evening (FHE) about cultivating healthy habits!  We discussed what the main answers kids give in church are: Pray, read your scriptures, go to church, etc...  That if a question is asked of you and you say that, you probably got it right!  However, is it important to know the answers when called on in church or to live the answers?  They all agreed that actually praying is better than just answering a question that the answer is prayer!

The kids agreed with me that it is easy to sit on the couch and watch TV instead of doing what you know you should be doing.  There are so many things that we should be doing that sometimes it is overwhelming and we give up completely.  Cultivating habits helps with this.  You make a habit of brushing your teeth and you will not have to think about it anymore or try to remember, you will just start to brush your teeth, or feel like something isn't right until you have done your routine of brushing your teeth.

For our FHE I asked the kids what they thought they needed to work on to develop into a habit.  I love my husband so much.  With every crazy idea I have he jumps on board 100% and gets behind me.  Case in point - MBA!  He caught on pretty quick what I was doing and jumped right on in with the lesson.  So here is a list of habits that my kids know they should be doing but don't.

1. Put toys away

2. Brush your teeth

3. shower

4. flush the toilet

5. put laundry in basket

6. make your bed

7. put your shoes away

8. put your backpack away

9. put legos away

10. put the recliner down

11. do your homework

12. work on scouts/personal progress

13. do your personal scripture study

14. say personal prayers

15. wash hands with soap and water

16. go to bed early

17. do your personal chores

18. bring your dirty dishes to the sink

19. respect personal property

20. stop interrupting

21. don't have accidents in underware - wipe better

22. what you take into the car you take out of the car

23.  Put folded clothes away.

I thought they did a fantastic job of coming up with things they knew they should be doing but have not made into a habit.

Week 1

I will weigh myself every Sunday night just to see, remember, this is not about weight lose but healthy habits. I decided to do this at night so that I would have worst case scenerios.  So Sunday night September 28, 2014 I weighed in and took my measurements.

Bust 39 in
Waist 33.5 in (tummy under waist is 40 in)
Hips 43 in.

Goals

currently I am:

Weight 150 lbs.
Bust 39 in
Waist 33.5 in (tummy under waist is 40 in)
Hips 43 in.

Mind you I have had 4 children.  I will always have rolls and it is really hard to accept that with age my tummy may never be flat again.  Even when I lay down it does not sink in past my hip bones.  My skin just got too stretched out with bringing four people into the world.  The first pregnancy I gained 40 lbs.  Then the next two I gain 50 lbs. each time.  And the last I gained 60 lbs.  I was always able to loose it within 3 months of delivery but now it is catching up with me.

My goal is to start with one eating habit (1-10) and one exercise habit (11-16) and work on it for at least a week before moving on to adopting another habit.

1. Eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can only eat out if you are traveling.  Make your own meals.

2. Only snack on raw fruits and veggies throughout the day with no dipping sauce

3. Eat smaller portions and never seconds

4. Do not eat after 9 pm

5. Only eat desert if it comes before 9 pm

6. Only drink water

7. Drink 8 oz of water every two hours starting at 6 am till 8 pm.  This will abide by the 8x8 rule

8. Go to bed by 10 pm and I mean lights out asleep

9. Wake up 5:35 am.

10. Nap for either 20 min, 45 min, or no longer than 90 min.

according to Jennifer Ackerman from http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2009/jan/27/napping-guide-health-wellbeing

"Getting even the briefest nap is better than nothing...Naps make you brainier, healthier, safer...A short afternoon catnap of 20 minutes yields mostly Stage 2 sleep, which enhances alertness and concentration, elevates mood, and sharpens motor skills...Naps of up to 45 minutes may also include rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which enhances creative thinking and boosts sensory processing...at least 90 minutes, will limit sleep inertia by allowing you to wake from REM sleep."

(Exercise routine can change to keep interesting or progressing differently than thought you would.)

11. Go to Taekwondo 3x a week, typically M,W, & F.

12.  Go to Hapkido 3x a week typically M,W, & F.

13. run starting for 5 minutes 3x a week.  Increase by 1 minutes each week up to 20 minutes.  Okay if you split running up in 2 sessions in one day after you have reached 10 min goal.

14.  Do 25 sit ups 3x a week.  Increase by 5 each week.  Okay to do 2 seesions after you have reached 50 goal.

15. Do 10 push up 3x a week.  Increase by 2 each week.  Okay to do 2 sessions after you have reached 20 push up goal.

16.  Lift weights 2x a week typically T & Th.  Start from lowest weight and do up to 15 reps before you move on to heavier weight.

With this all said it is imporant that you know that I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormon.  Therefore it goes without saying that in my healthy habits that I have already developed are:

1. No smoking

2. No drinking alcohol

3. No tea or coffee

4. No drugs

5. No rated R movies (healthy minds)

6. No caffeine.  This is a misconception of Mormons that we do not drink caffeine.  There is nothing in our scriptures that says, No caffeine.  It states in the Doctrine and Covenants 89:9, "And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly."  We take that to be Tea and Coffee not caffeine.  However, in our family we believe in not partaking in adictive substances and caffeine is one.
